Patti Payne’s Cool Pads: Houseboat from Sleepless in Seattle sells for more than $2 million

The houseboat used in the movie Sleepless in Seattle has just sold. The sale price was not disclosed, but the PSBJ has learned that it was more than $2 million.
The houseboat, which is located at the end of a story-book dock with a flower-lined entry off of Westlake Avenue North in Lake Union, is one of the most iconic properties in Seattle.
Loretta Metcalf and Jim Healy, who owned it for 21 years prior to the recent sale, reportedly bought the boat for $550,000 and listed it for sale in 2008 for $2.5 million.
Longtime waterfront and luxury Realtor Rick Miner, with Coldwell Banker Danforth, handled the 2008 listing and explained that the Healys took it off the market when people began swarming the dock for pictures. They decided not to sell it after that.
But five years later, Miner had a Seattle resident buyer who loved the lake, loved paddle boarding and wanted a family summer home close to the family’s Seattle house so they wouldn’t have to commute to a vacation place. Now it’s a five minute commute to their little piece of heaven on the water.
Miner said he played the role of quiet matchmaker, and so the sale went though and was completed at the end of August discreetly, without ever hitting the Northwest Multiple Listing Service (MLS).
The family who bought the houseboat wishes to remain anonymous. He is an executive in the high-tech industry who just turned 50 and held his birthday party on board.
The sale price of the home was also not disclosed, but sources tell me that it was over $2 million.
The houseboat has four bedrooms, is about 2200 square feet inside, and, Miner said, has the largest float footprint – 2,700 square feet on a log float – of any houseboat in the Seattle area. Right now there is not a stick of furniture in it except some paddle boards that belong to the new owners.
